Suruga Sensuji Bamboo Latticeware

Shizuoka Bamboo Craft Cooperative

In Shizuoka City, the Suruga Bamboo Craft Cooperative is formed by twelve artisans specializing in Suruga Bamboo Lattice Craftsmanship.

Using finely split bamboo strips rounded into rods, these craftsmen use traditional techniques to intricately weave and assemble delicate items like flower vases, insect cages, and sweet containers.

In 1976, this craft was officially designated as a Traditional Craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (now the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).

Tea Dyeing with Washizu

Kyōichirō Washizu

Head of Dyeing at the Bamboo and Dyeing Studio Take & Some in Takumishuku

Washizu leads the efforts in Suruga Wazome (Japanese dyeing), a craft deeply rooted in Shizuoka City, known for its stronge community of indigo dyers settled along the old Abe River since the Edo period.

With extensive knowledge in traditional Suruga dye techniques, Washizu also innovatively uses Shizuoka’s famous tea as a dyeing material.

He aims to spread both the unique products and techniques of tea dyeing, hoping to establish a new cultural landmark in Shizuoka.

In 2023, he received an award at a National Exhibition.

Kozou Hako Style

Katsuhisa Toda

Head of Woodworking at the Wood and Lacquer Studio Ki & Urushi in Takumishuku

Sashimono Master

Sashimono is the Japanese art of woodworking that joins pieces of wood together without nails or adhesive.

This technique, known for its sophistication and beauty, gets its durability from its precision in the joint parts called “shikuchi,” distinguishing itself from mass-produced furniture.

As our lifestyles change with the times, Toda is committed to elevating this rare traditional craft in the modern era, continuing to refine his skills daily.

He was awarded the Shizuoka Governor’s Prize at the 43rd Shizuoka Traditional Crafts Exhibition for his work on a meticulously crafted tea caddy, the “Tutu.”

Lacquer Ware Production/Shop  Fujinaka

Tomoyuki Fujinaka

Head of Lacquerware at the Wood and Lacquer Studio Ki & Urushi in Takumishuku

He continues the tradition of Suruga lacquerware, a craft that took root during the construction of the Sengen Shrine in Edo-period Shizuoka City, when skilled lacquer artisans were invited from all over Japan.

Fujinaka originally trained in Toba lacquer art before establishing his own workshop.

He integrates contemporary tastes with traditional techniques to create items designed to resonate widely, blending tradition with his own works in the fields of design and art as well.
