Takumishuku is a premier destination for experiencing Japan’s rich heritage of traditional crafts, a legacy that dates back to the Imagawa and Tokugawa eras in Shizuoka. As one of the largest experience-based artisanal workshops in the country, it offers an opportunity to engage with bamboo ware, indigo and tea dyeing, woodworking, lacquering, and pottery. We warmly invite you to discover something new through age-old artistry at Takumishuku.

Suruga Bamboo Crafting Experience

You have the unique chance to try your hand at a prized traditional craft of Shizuoka City known as “Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku,” a type of bamboo lattice ware. This exclusive experience is found only here in Shizuoka.

The process involves weaving delicate ‘higo’ (bamboo strips) to create items that are both beautiful and sturdy.

You’ll have the opportunity to craft practical yet elegant items like small storage containers, flower vases, and wind chimes. These pieces are designed to integrate effortlessly into your daily life, complementing both traditional Japanese and modern interior styles.

Japanese Dyeing Experience

Discover the world of textile art. This hands-on experience focuses on the techniques of shibori-zome (tie-dyeing) and kata-zome (stencil dyeing).

Besides indigo dyeing, what sets Takumishuku apart is the chance to try tea dyeing, guided by our workshop leader and renowned expert in this field.

For you beginners, don’t miss our stencil dyeing experience which is a hit for its vibrant colors and effortless technique. We offer a wide choice of materials, making it a fun and engaging experience for both kids and adults alike.

Studio KI & SHIKKUI

Woodworking Experience

Suruga Sashimono, our local woodworking style, is a unique method of crafting wooden products without using nails, relying on joints and grooves for assembly instead.

This technique has placed Shizuoka on the map for furniture-making.

In this experience, participants get to truly connect with the wood as we cover two main techniques: assembling and carving.

One of our most popular activities is making your own cutlery. You’ll focus on getting the perfect depth, length, and feel, to create spoons, forks, and more, that are just right for you.

Lacquer Experience

The roots of our lacquer craft trace back to when artisans from all over Japan came together for the construction of Sengen Shrine. They eventually made Shizuoka their home and shared their expertise.

In our chopstick-making experience, you’ll start with pieces that craftsmen have already coated with natural lacquer. Your role will be to refine them through sanding and finishing, bringing out their beauty.

We also offer a chance to create your own lacquered tumblers or jewelry, adding a personal touch with gold or silver dust over a lacquer base, a classic art form known as maki-e.

Studio HI & TSUCHI

Pottery Experience

Step into our studio and easily get started with the electric potter’s wheel. Our instructors are here to guide beginners with just the right balance of assistance and freedom, ensuring a rewarding experience in creating your piece.

Our te-bineri sessions are a hit with all ages. Here, instead of just focusing on making pots and bowls, we encourage you to let your imagination run wild. Create anything, from personalized plates with handprints, to one-of-a-kind chopstick rests — it’s all about bringing your own ideas to life.

We also offer a pottery painting session, ideal for crafting memorable keepsakes. You have the freedom to paint your memories and designs onto your ceramic creation.
